Apple trees like roses.
If you’ve been stalking our blog you might recall that Bob Blokdyk of Windmill Nursery gifted us a bunch of nice fruit trees back in August. We are super excited to announce that we planted three apples, a plum, a pluot, and a pear last Saturday just in time for rain this week. Noey Turk of Yes Yes Nursery donated a charming array of native plants to accompany the apples (think cottage garden) and installation of a pollinator border at the SW corner of the property was begun. The video tells the details if you are nerdy about gardening with California native plants, and Dalton informed me that apples like roses, maybe because they are both in the plant family Rosaceae, sub-family pomoideae.
You are invited to stop by on Saturday December 23. Weather permitting we’ll probably be getting started around 9 am, and you can help us plant the rest of our donated trees if you want. There are two peaches, a nectarine, a fig, and a pomegranate. We want to plant some citrus near the intersection too. What kind do we want? Tangerine? Lemon? Lime? The orchard is to provide treats for all of us so if you have a burning desire you’ve got to let us know.
The way this project develops is going to have everything to do with who shows up. So if you are passionate about food, flowers, organic gardening, community activism, secure local food systems, environmental education, social equity, vibrant health, culinary herbs, homegrown remedies, habitat restoration, native plants, sitting outdoors, getting to know your neighbors, or just sitting and staring at plants, you qualify for membership in your neighborhood garden, the Buellton Community Garden.
